What strategies do you use to cope with negative feelings?
Firstly we will try to understand how we get these feelings in the first place then to try and realise we have two strategies to cope with these feelings.
Our detectors create vision and audio (we see and hear) then along with our brains we create a concept. We could also have a similar concept stored in memory and from this we find meaning then from meaning we create a feeling.
When we detect something which is in alignment with our concepts and meanings, our feelings will result in a positive happy feeling. On the other hand if the input is out of alignment the result will be an unhappy or negative feeling.
Is this negative concept now stored in our memory? Yes!
One strategy we could use would be to find something positive to do to take our mind off the negative. We will switch our input to give us the desired outcome. However the stored negative memory can return, and you could add another concept and make it worse so now you are on a merry go round of overthinking which could end up with dire consequences. Trying to find something to make you feel good is now too difficult so you become overwhelmed with rejection, sadness or hate.
Now it’s time to understand that when something or someone external to you creates a negative feeling things will never get better for you if you go outside of yourself and do something different.
We have to realise the problem is not external. The problem is internally stored in concepts and memory so the only way to permanently fix the problem is to shift from the external world to the internal world. Our real world and the life we live both stem from our real inner self. Our outer world is only a reflection of the inner.
We each have to find our own way to journey inward. If you need a helping hand subscribe, email me or comment.
